Short answer
Open your inventory and select a food item to eat it directly, restoring your character's Food/hunger stat and sometimes Sanity or HP too. Pals eat automatically from their inventory slot or a base Feed Box. Letting hunger hit zero causes your character to lose health over time, and hungry Pals work slower and can lose condition.
