How do you catch Alpha Pals in Palworld?

Answer

Reduce the Alpha to low health, apply a status effect if you can, then throw the best Pal Sphere you have. Capture chance improves with lower remaining health, higher sphere tier, capture power from Lifmunk Effigies, and throwing from behind.

Alphas have big health pools, which makes a failed capture expensive — you have to grind the fight back down again. Stacking every modifier before you throw is worth the extra minute.

What the capture chance depends on

FactorEffect
Remaining healthThe biggest single factor — red health is the target
Sphere tierA large multiplier; always use your best on an Alpha
Capture powerPermanent bonus from Lifmunk Effigies
Status effectsConditions on the target improve odds
Sneak attack throwThrowing from behind gives a bonus
Target levelHigher-level targets are inherently harder

None of these are optional extras on an Alpha. Use all of them.

The routine

  1. Scout the element. Look the species up in the Paldex and bring a counter.
  2. Open with a sneak attack while it is unaware.
  3. Damage carefully. Bring it to red without killing it — swap to a weaker weapon as you approach the threshold.
  4. Apply a status effect if your kit can.
  5. Throw from behind, using your best sphere.
  6. Keep throwing. A failure is not a reset; the Alpha stays weakened.

Preparation that actually matters

  • Hand in effigies first. Capture power is permanent and applies to every throw for the rest of the save. It is the highest-return prep in the game.
  • Craft spheres in bulk. Bring far more than you think — twenty is not excessive for a difficult Alpha.
  • Bring healing. The fight is long, and dying resets your positioning.
  • Use a tanky partner Pal to hold aggro while you throw.

Why capture instead of kill

A captured Alpha arrives at its full high level, which is well above anything you can catch normally at that point. It is immediately your strongest combat Pal or mount. It also becomes a breeding parent — run it through the breeding calculator and you may find it is one half of a unique recipe you have been chasing.

And duplicates are not wasted: extra copies feed the Pal Condenser for permanent star-rank stat increases, which is the closest thing Palworld has to evolution.

Common mistakes

  • Killing it by accident with an over-tuned weapon at low health
  • Using cheap spheres on a high-level target to "save materials"
  • Ignoring effigies and blaming bad luck
  • Fighting without the element counter, turning a two-minute fight into ten

Frequently asked questions

What increases capture rate in Palworld?
Lower target health, a higher sphere tier, capture power from handing in Lifmunk Effigies, status effects on the target, and throwing from behind for the sneak bonus.
Which Pal Sphere should you use on an Alpha?
The highest tier you can craft. Sphere tier is one of the largest multipliers in the capture formula, and a failed throw on an Alpha costs a lot of fight time.
Can you catch tower bosses in Palworld?
No. Tower bosses are story encounters and cannot be captured. Only field Alphas and dungeon bosses can be caught.
