Breeding
Palworld eggs: incubator setup, temperature and faster hatching
8 min readUpdated 2026-08-05
Short answer
Unlock the Egg Incubator at Technology level 7, build it with 10 Paldium Fragments, 30 Stone, 5 Cloth and 2 Ancient Civilization Parts, then place an egg inside. Most eggs hatch in real time, so regulate the temperature with a Campfire or Cooler and hatch several eggs in parallel using multiple incubators.
Every bred Pal in Palworld arrives inside an egg, and eggs are where most breeding projects lose their momentum. An incubator sitting at the wrong temperature, a single incubator serving a farm that produces an egg every five minutes, a chest full of Huge Eggs nobody has hatched — all of it slows a breeding chain to a crawl.
This guide covers the incubator itself, temperature control, hatching speed, and how to read an egg before you commit incubator space to it. If you are here to work out *which* Pal an egg will contain, the breeding calculator answers that from the two parents standing in your farm.
Unlocking and building the Egg Incubator
The Egg Incubator appears in the tech tree at Technology level 7. It costs:
- 10 Paldium Fragments
- 30 Stone
- 5 Cloth
- 2 Ancient Civilization Parts
Ancient Civilization Parts are the gate. They drop from Alpha Pals and from the Syndicate Tower bosses, not from ordinary mobs, so your first incubator usually follows your first Alpha kill. The interactive map marks every Alpha Pal, dungeon and tower on Palpagos, which makes stocking up on parts a planned trip rather than a wander.
You can build as many incubators as your base allows, and you should. Incubators run independently, so ten incubators hatch ten eggs in the time one hatches one. A serious breeding base has a row of six to twelve along a wall next to the Breeding Farm.
Temperature: the part people skip
Open an incubator with an egg in it and it reports the egg's comfort. Eggs hatch fastest when the ambient temperature matches their type. Getting it wrong does not destroy the egg, but it slows the timer noticeably.
| Egg type | Wants | How to provide it |
|---|---|---|
| Scorching Egg | Hot | Campfire or Heater next to the incubator |
| Frozen Egg | Cold | Cooler, or build the base in a snow region |
| Damp Egg | Cool / mild | Shade, cool biome, or a single Cooler |
| Verdant Egg | Mild | Neutral base temperature |
| Electric Egg | Mild to warm | Neutral, or a Heater in a cold biome |
| Rocky Egg | Neutral | Neutral base temperature |
| Dark Egg | Cool | Cooler or a night-time cold biome |
| Dragon Egg | Warm | Heater |
| Common Egg | Any | No adjustment needed |
The practical setup is to build your hatchery indoors, put a Campfire or Heater at one end and a Cooler at the other, and move eggs to whichever end matches. Two temperature zones cover every egg in the game.
Huge Eggs from a Breeding Farm follow the same rules as their wild equivalents — a Huge Scorching Egg still wants heat. The "Huge" prefix only tells you the egg came from breeding.
How long do eggs take to hatch?
Hatch time depends on the egg's rarity tier and runs on real time, not in-game time. Broadly:
- Common eggs: minutes
- Uncommon and Rare eggs: tens of minutes
- Huge and Legendary eggs: a couple of hours at default settings
Because it is real time, an egg keeps cooking while you play elsewhere in the world, and on a dedicated server it keeps cooking while you are offline. The efficient pattern is: fill every incubator before a play session, go do something else — an Alpha hunt, a base build, a dungeon run — and come back to a row of finished eggs.
Cutting hatch time to zero
In singleplayer and on any server you host, hatch time is a world setting rather than a fixed rule:
- Open World Settings when creating a world, or edit PalWorldSettings.ini on a dedicated server.
- Find PalEggDefaultHatchingTime.
- Set it to 0 for instant hatching, or something like 1 for one-hour eggs regardless of rarity.
Most players who breed for passive skills set this low. Waiting two hours to learn that a child rolled the wrong passives turns a fun optimisation loop into a chore, and the setting can be changed at any point without starting a new world.
On official multiplayer servers you cannot change it, so plan around the timer: breed at the end of a session, hatch at the start of the next.
Reading an egg before you hatch it
An egg's name tells you its element family and its size tier, and that pair narrows the possible Pals considerably. A Huge Scorching Egg is a Fire Pal from the larger size class; a Damp Egg is a small Water Pal.
For eggs you found in the world, that is all you get until it hatches. For eggs from your own Breeding Farm, you already know the answer — the child of any two parents is fixed, so entering the pair into the breeding calculator tells you the exact species before the egg even appears. If you want a specific Pal and need to know which parents produce it, the combinations page lists every valid pair.
Wild eggs are worth collecting
Eggs scattered in the world are free Pals, often above your current level, and they cost no Cake. Priority pickups:
- Large eggs on cliff ledges and mountain plateaus — frequently high-tier Pals
- Eggs inside dungeons — usually match the dungeon's element
- Eggs in the volcano and snow regions — Scorching and Frozen tiers, the two most useful for early Fire and Ice coverage
They are marked on our map alongside chests and effigies, and a single sweep of a region on a flying mount usually fills a chest.
Hatchery layout that actually works
A layout used by most efficient breeding bases:
- Breeding Farm in the open, with a chest of Cake beside it.
- A wall of incubators immediately behind the farm — six minimum.
- Heater at one end, Cooler at the other, both powered.
- A large chest for eggs you have not slotted yet.
- Your Palbox within a few steps, so hatched Pals can be sorted immediately.
Keep at least ten free Palbox slots before a hatching run. A full Palbox will block hatching and it is easy to lose track of when you are cycling twenty eggs looking for one passive.
Troubleshooting
- Egg is not progressing. It is not actually in the incubator — check you placed it rather than dropped it, and check the incubator has an egg icon.
- Timer looks frozen. The egg is at the wrong temperature. Move it to your heated or cooled end.
- No incubator blueprint. You are below Technology level 7, or you have not spent the points.
- Cannot afford Ancient Civilization Parts. Kill any Alpha Pal; every Alpha drops them, and they respawn.
- Hatched Pal is the wrong species. Breeding is deterministic — if the child was not what you expected, the parents were not what you thought. Verify them in the calculator.
Quick reference
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Incubator tech level | 7 |
| Incubator cost | 10 Paldium, 30 Stone, 5 Cloth, 2 Ancient Civilization Parts |
| Eggs per incubator | 1 |
| Timer type | Real time, continues while you play elsewhere |
| Speed setting | PalEggDefaultHatchingTime in world settings |
| Temperature tools | Campfire, Heater, Cooler |
Set up two temperature zones, build more incubators than you think you need, and drop the hatch timer if your world allows it. Everything else about breeding gets easier once eggs stop being the bottleneck.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you unlock the Egg Incubator in Palworld?
- It unlocks at Technology level 7 and costs 10 Paldium Fragments, 30 Stone, 5 Cloth and 2 Ancient Civilization Parts. Ancient Civilization Parts drop from Alpha Pals and tower bosses.
- How do you make eggs hatch faster in Palworld?
- Match the incubator's ambient temperature to the egg type using a Campfire, Heater or Cooler, run several incubators at once, and lower PalEggDefaultHatchingTime in world or server settings — setting it to 0 makes eggs hatch instantly.
- What temperature does each egg need?
- Scorching and Dragon eggs want heat, Frozen, Damp and Dark eggs want cold, and Verdant, Rocky, Electric and Common eggs are fine at neutral temperature. Building a heated end and a cooled end covers every type.
- Do eggs hatch while you are offline?
- Hatching runs on real time, so eggs continue while you play elsewhere in the world and while a dedicated server stays running. In singleplayer the timer only advances while the game is open.
- Can you tell what is inside an egg before it hatches?
- For wild eggs, only the element family and size tier from its name. For eggs from your Breeding Farm the result is fixed by the parents, so the breeding calculator tells you the exact species in advance.
