Breeding legendary Pals in Palworld: what works and what does not

"How do I breed Jetragon?" is one of the most searched Palworld questions, and the honest answer is that you cannot. Palworld's data file assigns every breedable Pal a hidden breeding rank; thirty-nine Pals simply have no rank, which means no combination of parents can ever produce them. Jetragon is one of them.

That is not the end of the story, though. Several Pals that *feel* legendary are perfectly breedable, and a few of them are among the strongest things you can put in a party. This guide separates the two lists and gives the recipes that work.

Pals you cannot breed

These have no breeding rank in the v1.0 data. If the breeding calculator reports "cannot be bred", this is why:

Tower boss versions of Grizzbolt, Lyleen Noct, Orserk, Faleris and Shadowbeak are also unbreedable as the boss variant — but the standard versions of several of these *are* breedable, which trips people up constantly.

Legendaries you can breed

These come from unique recipes — hard-coded pairs that ignore rank averaging and always produce the same child.

Jormuntide Ignis deserves a special mention: it has Kindling level 4, making it the best furnace and refinery Pal in the game, and it is fully breedable. Anyone struggling with Ingot production should build toward this pair before anything else.

Breeding toward a legendary you do not have parents for

Unique recipes often require Pals that are themselves hard to obtain — Relaxaurus, Grizzbolt and Astegon are not early-game catches. Two approaches:

Work the ladder upward

Rank averaging means each generation lands between its parents. Pair your highest-rank Pal with a mid-rank partner, hatch the result, then pair *that* child with your highest-rank Pal again. Each loop pulls you closer to the top of the ladder. It is slow but it needs no new catches.

Let the path finder do it

The breeding path finder takes the Pals you actually own and searches for the shortest chain of breeding steps to your target. It uses the same verified v1.0 data as the calculator, so every step it returns is a pair that genuinely works in game. In practice it usually finds a two- or three-generation route where manual laddering would take six.

Getting the uncatchable ones: fighting a level 50 field boss

For Jetragon, Frostallion, Paladius and Necromus, preparation beats level.

• Gear tier matters more than your level. An assault rifle or rocket launcher plus Advanced Metal Armor changes these fights completely.
• Bring the element counter. Jetragon is Dragon — use Ice. Frostallion is Ice — use Fire. Paladius and Necromus are Neutral and Dark — use Dark and Dragon respectively.
• Stock Legendary Spheres. Twenty minimum. Catch rates at this tier are brutal even at low health.
• Use terrain. All four have wide melee arcs and charge attacks. Fight near rocks you can break line of sight behind, and keep a flying mount summoned for repositioning.
• They respawn. An hour of in-game time, or a server restart, brings them back. Failing costs nothing permanent.

Once caught, these Pals cannot be duplicated by breeding — but their passive skills can be transferred. A caught Jetragon with the Legend passive can pass Legend down through unrelated pairs, which is how endgame players build passive-perfect work Pals.

Passive inheritance is the real endgame

Since you cannot breed more legendaries, the value of breeding at the top of the game is passive laundering:

1. Catch a legendary that rolled a good passive.
2. Breed it with a breedable partner — the child inherits from the combined pool.
3. Keep breeding children that hold the passive you want.
4. Eventually pair two carriers of the same passive; shared passives inherit at a much higher rate.

Four-passive combat Pals with Legend, Musclehead, Ferocious and Burly Body come out of exactly this loop. It costs a lot of Cake, which is why every serious base runs a Wheat and Milk operation before it runs a breeding programme.

Quick answers

Before planning any legendary project, run the target through the combinations page. If it returns no pairs, stop breeding and start hunting — and if it returns a unique recipe, you have a repeatable supply.
