Sulfur is mined from pale yellow nodes in the desert regions in the north-east and east of Palpagos, in the volcanic south-east, and inside some dungeons. You need a Metal Pickaxe, and Sulfur is required for Gunpowder, which in turn gates every firearm and all ammunition.

Sulfur is the material that turns Palworld from a survival game into a shooter. Guns are craftable early, but without Gunpowder they are decorations, and Gunpowder is Sulfur.

Sulfur locations

Sulfur appears as pale yellow ore nodes, visually distinct from grey stone and dark Coal:

Desert regions, north-east and east. The densest surface clusters in the game, often sitting right next to Coal, which makes a combined mining base possible.
Volcanic region, south-east. Plenty of Sulfur, but higher-level Pals and heat damage.
Dungeon interiors. Many dungeons contain Sulfur nodes along the route to the boss, so a dungeon loop doubles as a Sulfur run.

Requirements

Metal Pickaxe or better — stone will not break Sulfur.
Heat-resistant armour for daytime desert trips.
A mount, because Sulfur is a restricted material and blocks fast travel.
Carry weight upgrades, or you will fill your bag in two nodes.

Build a combined Coal and Sulfur base

Because the two materials share regions, the strongest play is a single desert base positioned between a Coal cluster and a Sulfur cluster:

Place the Palbox roughly equidistant between clusters, within the base radius circle.
Assign three or four Mining Pals — Digtoise, Anubis, Astegon or Tombat.
Add one Transporting Pal so mined material reaches the chest rather than sitting on the ground.
Add a Furnace and later a Production Assembly Line to convert Coal into Carbon Fiber and Sulfur into Gunpowder on site.
Add a food source — a small berry plantation and a cooking pot keeps the crew working.

That single base covers ammunition, Carbon Fiber and most late-game crafting. It is the highest-value secondary base most players ever build.

Ammunition is consumed continuously once you start fighting Alphas and tower bosses, so treat Sulfur as a renewable running cost rather than a one-time unlock.

Efficiency tips

Catch, do not kill, the Pals guarding the nodes. Free XP, and the desert Pals are useful workers.
Mine with a Pal out. A summoned Mining Pal helps break nodes far faster than you alone.
Chain a dungeon. If a dungeon sits near your Sulfur base, clearing it on the same trip gives Ancient Technology Points as well.
Do not haul. Refine on site, teleport home with the finished product.
