How do you change a Pal's passive skills in Palworld?

Answer

Passive skills cannot be edited on an existing Pal. To change them you breed: children can inherit passives from either parent, so you pair Pals carrying the traits you want and repeat until a child rolls the full set you are after.

Passive skills are the difference between a Pal that is fine and a Pal that is genuinely strong — and there is no item that changes them. The only tool is breeding.

How inheritance works

A child can inherit passives from either parent. Roll enough eggs from parents carrying the traits you want and eventually a child gets the combination.

That makes the process straightforward but iterative:

  1. Find or catch Pals carrying the passives you want, in any species.
  2. Breed them together.
  3. Keep the child that inherited the most useful traits.
  4. Breed that child with another carrier.
  5. Repeat until you have all four on one Pal.
  6. Finally, breed that passive set onto the species you actually want.

That last step is where the breeding calculator earns its place — it tells you which pairs produce which species, so you can steer the passives onto the right body. The combinations browser works backwards from a target species, and the path finder plots a route from the Pals you already own.

Passives worth chasing

RolePassives
CombatLegend, Musclehead, Ferocious, Burly Body
Work PalsArtisan, Serious, Lucky, Work Slave
MountsRunner, Nimble, Swift
UtilityLucky, and stat-boosting traits

Do not mix roles. Four combat passives on a combat Pal beats two combat and two work passives on the same Pal.

Running the project efficiently

  • Many incubators. Passive inheritance is a numbers game — see how long eggs take to hatch and build in parallel.
  • Deep Cake supply. Every egg costs one. Get the Cake chain running at volume first.
  • Keep a male and a female of each carrier so a project never stalls on gender.
  • Sell the discards to a Pal Merchant — passive projects generate a lot of surplus and it is good money.

Then condense

Once a Pal has the passive set you want, that is the one to invest in. Feed duplicates into the Pal Condenser for permanent star-rank stats, level it, and equip appropriate gear. Passives first, condensing second — doing it the other way round wastes the condense.

A full worked example of a four-passive chain is in the legendary breeding guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reroll passive skills in Palworld?
Not on an existing Pal. Passives are set when a Pal is caught or hatched, so breeding a new one is the way to get a different set.
How many passive skills can a Pal have?
Up to four. A four-passive Pal with the right combination is a substantial upgrade over an unoptimised one.
Which passive skills are best in Palworld?
For combat, Legend, Musclehead and Ferocious. For work Pals, Artisan and Serious. For mounts, Runner, Nimble and Swift.
